Greetings Parents and Players!
Fall Fun on the Field
A Letter from the Director
This is my second fall in Los Angeles and I still canÕt
believe that lacrosse is available outdoors year-
round! It almost makes it hard for me to get into the
holiday spirit! Growing up in Colorado, the holiday
season meant it was time to take your stick indoors
(Starz Clubs in Oregon, Seattle and St. Louis can all
relate!) IsnÕt it great how weather never stops ones
passion for the game? Whether your playing
catch on the beach at sunset or playing wall ball at
the indoor gym, our love for lacrosse wonÕt allow for
an off-season.
Starz Headquarters is very excited about the
success of the fall program thus far. Both the girls
and boys have completed their first Jamborees and
our West Coast Starz teams have taken trips to the
east. We are lucky to have top-notch coaches back
on staff, many returning Starz players, and
some new faces as well!
The Starz Foundation has also experienced
considerable growth this fall with the opening of our
office in
Hermosa Beach, CA! Initial donations have allowed
for college counseling to begin, a big screen TV was
donated to watch player highlight films, and free
foundation
clinics have begun for kids to learn the game of
lacrosse. The Foundation is also pleased to
introduce great additions to the staff in Doug Locker,
the General Manager of the MLLÕs San Francisco
Dragons, as a college counselor and Kim Archer as
the Director of Fundraising and Marketing.
I hope that you are enjoying the Fall Season as much
as I am, no matter where you are playing lacrosse.
Starz wishes you and your family a happy and
healthy holiday season!

West Coast Starz Head East
Boys show strong competition at Maryland;Girls get rained out
The Boys' West Coast Starz attended the
National High School Invitational in College
Park, Maryland Novemeber 4/5 that included teams
from New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, DC, Virginia,
and Florida.
The weekendÕs event was successful for all three
Starz teams that combined to win 11 of 15 games at
the tournament held at the University of Maryland.
Upon return to California, Starz President Scott
Hochstadt said, "My email is being bombarded
with college coaches asking me about our student-
athletes. In Maryland, they said our group of kids
was the best club at the event." Hochstadt
said. "Maryland's offensive coordinator told me they
looked like a college team the way they executed the
offense and plays."
Since the boys have been back on the West Coast,
they have been receiving letters from: Virginia,
Hopkins, Yale, Towson, Denver, UMBC, Loyola,
Dartmouth, Cornell, and Hofstra.
The first-ever Girls' West Coast Starz team
took a trip to the east the following weekend after
the boys' were there. After beating a Florida based
All-Star team 7-1, the Girls' West Coast Starz team
was rained out of the Mid-Atlantic Classic.
But the rain didnÕt stop this team from bonding, said
Starz WomenÕs Director Kinsley
OÕGarrow, ŌThe girls really learned what it is like
to sink and swim as a team, literally. After minimal
practices, I was so proud of how they played their
first game in the pouring rain, it was a rewarding
win! Even when the tournament was cancelled, the
girls stuck together and what a better way to bond
than at
the mall for the rest of the
day.Ķ The weekend reminded the girls that lacrosse
is not all about winning.

Starz College Counseling Update
Letter from the Director of Starz College Counseling
Since my introduction to the Starz Foundation last
July, I have had the distinct pleasure of talking with
a number of Starz families either in person or on the
phone. How impressed I am with your passion and
commitment! As I said at the function in Sonoma, I
am so incredibly proud of my former student Scott
Hochstadt and all that he is doing to serve the needs
of those young men and women who aspire to play college
lacrosse.
As the Holidays fast approach, I want to encourage
the student-athletes to make academics the high
priority they deserve to be. Juniors, whatever you
accomplished, or failed to accomplish, in the
classroom during your first two years, college
admissions offices love to see applicants who kick it
up a notch or two as upperclassmen. Progression is
just one factor that can influence their decision.
And, yes, it will be the admissions office that reviews
your application and determines your fate.
And Seniors, while I urge you to be proactive in your
college search, I also want to inform you that all
college acceptances are contingent upon the
successful completion of the senior year. Don't
achieve something and then blow it with a case of
premature senioritis or poor judgment. The game of lacrosse
is
played in four quarters, and sometimes with an
overtime. The winning teams are the ones that give
it their all from the opening whistle to the final horn.
As I once told Scott, winners make it happen.
I want to wish everyone in the Starz family a Happy
Thanksgiving. My hope is to meet more of you in the
days ahead. Until then, complete every assignment
and get every ground ball with the heart of a
champion.
All the best,
Dick Webster
